Mentoring and Mindfulness Meditation Teacher-student Meetings

What is mentoring or a mindfulness meditation teacher-student meeting?

The mentoring is for people who are actively practicing meditation, and who would like to confer with a teacher about that practice.  Discussions may focus on specific questions about one’s meditation practice itself, concerns about the integration of practice into one’s daily life, or on an exploration of the truth as it is experienced through direct insight from meditation.

The mentoring usually takes place once a month and they are usually scheduled for an hour. They may take place at Janka’s Home Studio, by phone or Skype. Please respect these meetings (including phone and Skype meetings) as you would any other appointment – please be on time and please give at least 24 hours notification for a cancellation.

What is the fee?

There is no set charge for these meetings, in turn; students make voluntary offerings (Dana). Dana is the time-honored etic and tradition of expressing gratitude through generosity that Janka is dedicated to keeping alive by freely offering her time and guidance. Your contributions will help Janka continue to lead a life devoted to teaching and practice.

There will be an opportunity to offer Dana to the teacher at the end of the meeting (financial contributions in the form of a check or cash).

What is the difference between psychotherapy and mentoring?

  • Mentoring focuses on one’s formal meditation practice and how meditation is applied in one’s life.
  • Emotional and psychological issues may surface in meditation practice and are addressed in a teacher interview from a mindfulness perspective.
  • Psychotherapy offers a venue where one can receive more in depth support for exploring issues such as depression/anxiety, trauma, family of origin issues, decision making, relational issues, addictions, and vocational concerns.
  • Teacher-student meetings should not be relied on for crisis intervention.

  • Experiencing postural/structural tensions or pain or recovering from an illness
  • In the process of integrating the work you are doing, or have done, in traditional psychotherapy

  • Stress reduction
  • Understanding the relationship between your body and your mind

How I do it:

  • Using movement and hands-on work
  • Analyzing your movement qualities and patterns and helping you find new patterns
  • Using my hands to guide movement that will help you find new ways of expressing yourself

Sessions are usually table- and/or floor-based and may include any or all of the following modalities: hands-on therapeutic bodywork, movement analysis and re-education, developmental movement, breath awareness, mindfulness and yoga postures.

Each session is 60 -75 min long. Fee is sliding scale from $55-$95. Please pay what you can, so others can benefits from your generosity.
